Understanding and Celebrating Individuals with Down Syndrome

Every year on March 21st, the world comes together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, raising awareness and promoting inclusion for individuals with Down syndrome. At Leading Home Care, we believe in empowering and supporting individuals of all abilities, ensuring they have access to quality care and opportunities to thrive.

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is a genetic condition that occurs when a person has an extra chromosome on the 21st pair.

How Does Down Syndrome Occur?

  • Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes (46 in total).
  • People with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome on the 21st pair, giving them 47 chromosomes instead of 46.
  • Chromosomes act like an instruction manual for the body, determining how a person develops and functions.
  • Down syndrome occurs naturally, and there is no known cause for this extra chromosome.

How Common is Down Syndrome?

Approximately 1 in every 800 babies is born with Down syndrome worldwide. It occurs across all racial and ethnic backgrounds and is not caused by anything parents do or don’t do during pregnancy.

How Does Down Syndrome Affect a Person?

Each person with Down syndrome is unique, with their own strengths, abilities, and challenges. However, some common characteristics include:

Intellectual disability – Most individuals experience some degree of intellectual disability, but this varies widely. Some may require more support, while others live independently.
Health considerations – Certain health conditions, such as heart defects, hearing loss, and thyroid issues, are more common in people with Down syndrome.
Distinctive physical features – Traits like almond-shaped eyes, a single crease across the palm, and smaller stature are common but do not define an individual.
Strong personalities and abilities – Many people with Down syndrome excel in school, work, sports, and the arts. They form meaningful relationships and contribute to their communities in valuable ways.
